Dean of the Earlham School of ReligionGENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the Earlham School of Religion and reports to the President of Earlham. The dean’s responsibilities include providing leadership to the faculty in program and curricular development, coordination of administrative and planning activities, with a focus on recruiting and providing an exceptional student experience to a diverse student body, budget preparation and oversight, institutional advancement, and representation of ESR to Quaker constituencies.

The dean is appointed by the president after consultation with the Dean Search Committee and the ESR Board of Advisors, subject to the approval of the Earlham Board of Trustees.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the faculty of ESR in program and curriculum development.
  • Oversee and coordinate faculty personnel processes.
  • Oversee and monitor ESR’s fidelity to authoritative governance procedures.
  • Lead ESR’s planning endeavors, assessment activities and accreditation.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the ESR Board of Advisors, and as a member of the Earlham School of Religion Committee of the Earlham Board of Trustees.
  • Steward ESR’s covenant relationship with Bethany Theological Seminary.
  • Prepare the annual budget and monitor that budget once it has been approved.
  • Serve as the chief advancement officer for ESR, overseeing the development of strategy in communications and fund-raising, and leadership in seeking major gifts and grants.
  • Represent ESR at Yearly Meetings of Friends and national and international organizations affiliated with the Religious Society of Friends.
  • Oversee the work of administrative staff in admissions, financial aid, registration, information technology, and student services. Participate in the annual evaluation of administrative faculty and evaluate hourly staff.
  • Lead ESR’s efforts toward diversity, equity, and inclusion.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Member of the Religious Society of Friends with a firm commitment to Quakerism.
  • Academic record appropriate to the appointment as a member of the faculty preferred.
  • Record of successful leadership and administration, preferably in a seminary environment.
  • Understanding of decision-making within Friends’ institutions preferred.
