DIRECTOR OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION JOB DESCRIPTION

Focus

The Director of Christian Education is a full time executive level staff position which will focus on spiritual health and growth of Western Yearly Meeting of Friends Church (WYM) with particular oversight regarding Christian Education.

Priorities

The Director of Christian Education’s primary responsibility is Christian Education and the support of Friends beliefs as stated in WYMFaith and Practice throughout Western Yearly Meeting.

  • The Director of Christian Education shall assist with the responsibilities of Western Yearly Meeting. S/he shall maintain office hours of three days per week from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
  • The Director of Christian Education will make visitations two times per month at specific worship or Meeting events. Within two years s/he will visit all WYM Meetings.
  • The priority in Christian Education is to continue and expand youth ministry and adult education. The duties to fulfill these responsibilities are:
    • Provide Christian Education and training opportunities to adults and youth.
    • Have responsibility over yearly meeting-wide programming for youth at Junior Yearly Meeting, Young Friends Yearly Meeting, Administrative Council, and Winter Retreat.
    • Participate in WYM/IYM (Indiana Yearly Meeting) leadership for Quaker Haven summer camping program.
    • Develop a ministry for all Young Adult Friends (YAF) to fellowship and exercise gifts of leadership through, but not limited to, Sundesmos. Visit YAFs at college and find avenues to visit YAFs in the work force.
    • Work with the Youth Cabinet and other Young Friends who show leadership potential by providing leadership training and spiritual formation opportunities.
    • Encourage, support and assist monthly meetings in youth ministry.
    • Help make special Quaker youth opportunities available. Such programs might include, but not be limited to:
      • National Quaker Youth Gatherings (when beneficial to WYM program)
      • FUM Young Friends events and activities
      • Quaker Work Camps
      • Programs of Friends Organizations (i.e. Quaker United Nations Organization, Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), William Penn House Programs)
    • Be a resource person for monthly meetings in all facets of Christian Education.

  • The Director of Christian Education shall attend Board on Christian Education meetings, WYM Sessions, Executive Committee meetings, Administrative Council meetings and other WYM Board meetings as requested by those Boards.
  • The Director of Christian Education is responsible to present periodic financial reports to the Board on Christian Education and the Sundesmos Task Force.

Accountability

The Director of Christian Education shall report to and take direction from the Board on Christian Education, the General Superintendent and the Executive Committee of Western Yearly Meeting.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to the purpose, goals, policies, and beliefs of Western Yearly Meeting as stated in Faith & Practice.

  • Member of the Religious Society of Friends with background in Christian Education is preferred.

  • Proficient in computer tasks relating to the ministry of the position.

  • Ability to problem-solve, communicate, supervise/complete tasks, work independently and with WYM and Quaker Haven staff.

  • Resourceful, adaptable leader who is able to work with a diversity of volunteers.

  • Willing to relocate to the Plainfield, Indiana area.
